This is a guided hike of the Mystic Falls and Biscuit Basin overlook trail from Old Faithful. You will leave Old Faithful with your guide, and start hiking along a paved path towards Morning Glory Pool, from where we will pick up the Artemisia Trail. We offer a separate guided hike of the Artemisia Trail.

At the end of the Artemisia Trail hike, we’ll make our way on the Mystic Falls part of the hike, across meadows and through a forest, before following the Little Firehole River towards Mystic Falls.  After exploring Mystic Falls for a while, it’s time to hike a switchback trail up a fairly steep hill towards the Biscuit Basin overlook, and a great view of the geyser basin below and the Upper Geyser Basin in the distance.

We’ll make our way out of this section of the trail through Biscuit Basin itself, before picking up the Daisy Geyser Trail to Old Faithful, where the hike ends. The Daisy Geyser Trail is available as a separate hike on its own.

The trail is approximately 9.1 miles (14.7 kilometres) long, and there is a vertical gain of 500 feet (152 metres) on the climb up to the Biscuit Basin overlook.

We have another guided hike to the area, which start at Old Faithful, and just visits Mystic Falls, but not the Biscuit Basin overlook.

If you’d prefer a hike which is a little shorter, please consider another of our guided hikes which starts at the Grand Loop Road, rather than Old Faithful, but still visits both Mystic Falls as well as the overlook of Biscuit Basin.  Shorter still is the trail from the Grand Loop Road, which hikes to Mystic Falls, but not the Biscuit Basin overlook.

Please check out the videos we have on the Mystic Falls and Biscuit Basin overlook hike from Old Faithful.

Tour Notes

We regret that cancellations and changes will not be accepted, and refunds will not be given. Half the amount may be charged to your card when you make the booking, and the balance will be charged 45 days from the tour date. An attempted or purported cancellation will result in the entire amount being charged to your card immediately.

The credit/debit card you used must be with you when you travel, and should be in your name. If you are booking for someone else, please let us know as you will need to complete the credit card authorization documentation, which we will send you.

If there are six or fewer people on the tour, a shuttle may transport you between Salt Lake and east Idaho, where one of our guides will pick you up and take you to Yellowstone. If this happens, the departure and drop off locations will be the Salt Lake City airport and a central Salt Lake downtown location. If there are more than six people, a dedicated guide and vehicle will transport you all the way.

This is a small group tour, with the possible exception of the shuttle between Salt Lake and east Idaho, where a bus may be used. The shuttle may make several stops on the way to east Idaho.

Parts of this tour may be provided by other vendors we use.

Times are approximate. The itinerary may change without notice, and we cannot be responsible for the consequences of delays.  At the beginning and end, of the season, road closures and weather conditions may prevent this tour being run as detailed. In particular, the road from Old Faithful to Grand Teton generally opens in mid-May. General road maintenance in the park may affect the way this tour operates.

Two nights’ lodging are included at Yellowstone Motel, or similar, in West Yellowstone.

Please do not make any plans that depend on this tour, until you receive our confirmation email.

This tour has a two person minimum for most of the season, and four people in the quiet times.

The entrance fees to the park are included.

Three picnic or sack lunches are the only meals included.
