The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim trail really is one of the more spectacular shorter hikes available anywhere! The trail follows the Yellowstone River as it makes its way over two major waterfalls, and a couple of smaller ones, through the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, as you and your guide hike in and out of a forest.

Estimates as to how long the hike is vary, but it is approximately 3.2 miles (5.1 kilometres) one way. We generally do the hike one way, but can do it on a roundtrip basis, as an add-on.

The trail undulates, and there are two sections, which can both be bypassed, which are steep on the way back up. The first of these is the detour down to the brink of the Lower Yellowstone Falls, and the second is a side trail off Lookout Point to another view of the Lower Yellowstone Falls.  The north rim hiking trail is designed so that both of these can be omitted without affecting the continuity of the hike. Please discuss with us beforehand as to whether you are comfortable with the steep uphill detours.

The hike will take in the brink of the Upper Falls, which is easily accessible, as well as the brink of the Lower Falls, if you are comfortable doing the hike back up, before continuing on to Lookout Point and Grand View Point. The trail between Grand View Point and Inspiration Point ducks in and out of the forest, before reaching the expansive vistas at Inspiration Point.

We have another hike which follows the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and this is the south rim hike. The south rim hike is not as taxing, and is also shorter.

Please check out the videos we have on the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim trail.

Tour Notes

We regret that cancellations and changes will not be accepted, and refunds will not be given. Half the amount may be charged to your card when you make the booking, and the balance will be charged 45 days from the tour date. An attempted or purported cancellation will result in the entire amount being charged to your card immediately.

The credit/debit card you used must be with you when you travel, and should be in your name. If you are booking for someone else, please let us know as you will need to complete the credit card authorization documentation, which we will send you.

If there are six or fewer people on the tour, a shuttle may transport you between Salt Lake and east Idaho, where one of our guides will pick you up and take you to Yellowstone. If this happens, the departure and drop off locations will be the Salt Lake City airport and a central Salt Lake downtown location. If there are more than six people, a dedicated guide and vehicle will transport you all the way.

This is a small group tour, with the possible exception of the shuttle between Salt Lake and east Idaho, where a bus may be used. The shuttle may make several stops on the way to east Idaho.

Parts of this tour may be provided by other vendors we use.

Times are approximate. The itinerary may change without notice, and we cannot be responsible for the consequences of delays.  At the beginning and end, of the season, road closures and weather conditions may prevent this tour being run as detailed. In particular, the road from Old Faithful to Grand Teton generally opens in mid-May. General road maintenance in the park may affect the way this tour operates.

Two nights’ lodging are included at Yellowstone Motel, or similar, in West Yellowstone.

Please do not make any plans that depend on this tour, until you receive our confirmation email.

This tour has a two person minimum for most of the season, and four people in the quiet times.

The entrance fees to the park are included.

Three picnic or sack lunches are the only meals included.
